The Southern Kansas City Model Railroad Historical Society Inc. (SKCMRRHS) is a nonprofit incorporated organization established to educate and promote knowledge, thru displays, programs and lectures, of the history and importance of railroads to individuals and the community.
The SKCMRRHS functions with a group of volunteers who model many eras of train layouts and landscapes. These eras contain realistic detail, using scale models of both the equipment and the environment. They illustrate the many diverse factors that affected the civilizations and economies touched by railroads at a particular time in history.
The Society invites the public, schools, scouts and all interested parties to observe and discuss how railroads affect their own and their friends’ and neighbors’ lives. We currently operate a 100 foot layout, which is open to the public each weekend and holiday, and has several hundred people a month observe its operation by several of the society’s volunteers. Our members use the layout to show and teach the public about railroading during these sessions. We offer information and assistance to organizations and individuals who are interested in building displays, both public and private. This information can include repair, upkeep, operation procedures, and safety aspects of railroading.
Society members meet monthly and, after a business meeting, present workshops on a multitude of railroad related items and are available for presentations to any public venue, regarding railroading history, operations, safety and modeling.
